Psalm 7:6-9
Increasingly, everywhere
other than my home I’m surrounded by a show of force; schools where I
work as a clinic nurse, my place of worship, and places of public gathering. It’s
alarming while necessary. I hope not to become overly accustomed to this,
losing the ability to discern and respond in the presence of danger. I must remember to rest my heart, to shelter
my spirit under God’s mighty wings in times of fear and grief.
David sang this song because
of Cush the Benjamite. It may have been the Ethiopian who told him of the
death of his son Absalom. David casts himself on God, calling on Him to clear
his name and to break the wicked.
As the world convulses with
hatred and violence toward others, our spirits cry out for God to intervene, to
rescue us! We want Him to be a superhero who delivers swift justice. We ask when will justice prevail? Job asked the question before we did. “Why do the wicked live on growing
old and increasing in power?” (Job 21:7)
Moses said to the people, “Don’t
be afraid. Stand firm and see the Lord’s salvation that He will accomplish for
you today.” (Exodus 14:13) I once thought standing
firm meant doing nothing. I have learned it takes power and courage to stand still,
to trust God’s heart when I can’t see His hand. There are times when doing
nothing is better than doing something, times when only God can do what is
needed. “The battle belongs to the Lord." (2 Chronicles 20:15)
Abba, Father who sends Your
rain on the just and unjust, confirm our faith that You will bring a day when
righteousness will reign, and evil will be no more.
Sovereign God who holds the
stars and galaxies in their unerring courses, thank You for holding my frail
and finite life in Your mighty hands.” (Portraits of Perseverance – Henry Gariepy.)
