My sister and I were
encouraged by our mother to spend time every evening reading in a favorite
book. She kept the bookcase in our bedroom updated with books of interest through
our growing up years. When I was a young adult, she gave John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress to me. I lacked life experiences to appreciate and understand the epic novel as I have
come to in later years. It’s much like the book of Hebrews with the main
character (Christian) traveling perilously toward the “Enchanted City.”
The apostle Paul, (believed
to be the author of the letter to the Hebrews,) was concerned that the
Corinthian church was losing its focus on Jesus by following the various
teachers of the day rather than the Savior. Paul corrected them; we are all
God’s fellow workers, with different gifts. It matters not who plants and who
waters, for only God can give the growth.
The writer of Hebrews
reminds us that our focus must be on Jesus alone as He has offered one perfect sacrifice for all sins – past,
present and future, Hebrews 10:14. As followers of Jesus we are tasked with
making disciples—sharing the Gospel and entertaining
strangers hospitably with open hearts. Hebrews 13:1-2.
As Bunyan’s Christian
traveler, we continue in awe and reverence to run the race of faith to the
finish line. “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud
of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so
easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.”
Hebrews 12:1. No turning back!
