During
the days I spent in the Highlands of Scotland I thought of Eric Liddell’s rugged
Olympic training schedule, running in the craggy wet moors with snow-capped
mountains as the backdrop. I am awed by his desire, and perseverance as a gold
medal Olympian and most of all, a hero of the faith!
“For the training of the
body has limited benefit but Godliness is beneficial in every way." 1 Timothy 4:8
Eric
Liddell (the Flying Scotsman) said this about running. “I believe God made me
for a purpose, but He also made me fast, and when I run, I feel His pleasure.”
God
gives gifts and talents to each of us. At
times our gifts are to be used as a service offering to Him, and at times for things
that bring us personal pleasure.
What
is it that you do when you “feel God’s pleasure?” At work when I comfort a sick
child, I feel His pleasure. Hiking in the Scottish Highlands, I felt His
pleasure.
Thank
You Lord for the gifts You have given enabling us to bring pleasure to You, to
ourselves and to others. Thank You for reminding us that in this flawed world
You still find pleasure in Your people.
Missionary
Eric Liddell died in a prison camp in China. Winston Churchill managed to
secure his freedom for a prisoner exchange. Liddell declined -offering his place
to a pregnant woman in the camp, saving her life and her unborn child.
