| Mark 12:28-30 |
Is it most important because it's the basis of all other commandments? Is it that knowing His divine essence and His perfect plan increases our faith and obedience to His sovereign power? Is it that we will respond with the ministry of the Holy Spirit?
When we set our affections on God and desire Him above all else, we devote our lives to Him with full commitment. That is how we love God with all of our heart and all of our soul. We submit our thought patterns, our opinions, our viewpoints, and ultimately our decisions to God’s Word. We don't lean on our own understanding but take every thought captive and then act in obedience to the Word of God. It's a tall order but that is how we love God with all of our heart, all of our soul, and all of our mind.
Ultimately, surrendering our abilities and talents to Him and His glory is how we love God with all of our strength. We recognize God as the source of our being and the purpose in our life. We allow Him to direct our destiny.
This first commandment will challenge us for a lifetime as we ask ourselves if our love of God has reached into every aspect of our lives. What might we love more than God? Is it money, power, self? What might we be serving that should be replaced with loving God? We CAN trust that placing God above all else is how we love Him and will fully satisfy our soul!
