Humility and Forgiveness Restore Unity

by Diane Ward

We are time-travelers through the microscopic lens of history and the living Word of God.

Archeological finds confirm Syria to be one of the most ancient civilizations on earth. The people of Syria have often endured crisis-driven war and division through political and sectarianism factions. Our country has been drawn into this age-old conflict with mixed political purpose and at times by humanitarian response.

King Ahab Defeats King Ben-Hadad of Syria -

Internal strife and idolatry between forces of Judaism was overshadowed by threat of war from the north. Ben-Hadad, king of Syria gathered a vast army augmented by armies of thirty-two neighboring chiefs who were promised “the spoils of war.” He then sent a message to King Ahab saying, “your silver and gold are mine; your wives and children also are mine.” Fearful of gathering armies Ahab submitted to the humiliating demand and sent word to appease the powerful king. Consulting with the Elders of his people, Ahab rejected Ben-Hadad’s demand to storm the palace. A prophet of God told him not to be afraid of the overwhelming superiority of the advancing army. He promised God would deliver the enemy into his hand so that he would recognize that God is Lord. Emboldened by this message Ahab made a stand against Ben-Hadad as he was lying in his tent. The army of Ben-Hadad, taken by surprise fled in disorder as casualties mounted. His people advised him to go humbly to King Ahab asking for forgiveness and mercy. Ahab moved by the humility of Ben-Hadad made a treaty of mutual friendship and brotherhood with him. In gratitude Ben-Hadad returned all the cities his father had taken from Ahab’s father.

What is the take-away for us from Ahab’s war and Ben-Hadad’s invasion?

Peace and unity are restored when humility trumps arrogance and forgiveness trumps revenge.

“Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. (Psalm 1:1-2)

An excellent end due to listening to God's word through his prophet
