Hosea 13:2-9 |
"Oh what a tangled web we weave, when we practice to deceive!"
Sin relies on deception and just like lying, one small sin results in far more sin. Even though we tell ourselves it will never happen again, we fall victim to the breakdown of our conscience once we scratch its surface. Our next sin doesn't seem to bother us as much nor keep us lying awake at night with the same sense of guilt or shame. Over time, we become desensitized to our sin and even to the sin of others!
Unfortunately, sin is a part of human existence, and when we turn toward sin, we are turning away from God. Since our hearts were created for worship, our sinfulness has us building idols of our own making. Our hearts turn away from God and become idol factories for something that provides us with pride and control. Yet, false idols can never fill the void in our soul. Idolatry robs us of the relationship with God who is our bread of life and living water.
Recognizing that most everything in our lives competes with God means we need to intentionally place God in the center of how we use our time, talent, and treasure. We must edify our thoughts and actions. Take daily steps toward Him with full confidence that he has bridged the gap between our progress and His perfection in the gift of His Son, Christ Jesus.
