John 14:15-21
I feel the sorrow of Jesus’ disciples as he prepares them for his death. “I will not leave you as orphans, I will come to you.” (John 14:18) I know the sorrow of being orphaned as my parents and my child have gone before me. Jesus tells them, there will be grief and sadness at his death, but only for a little while. The disciples (and all believers) will see Jesus at the resurrection and know lasting joy. Until that time Jesus tells the disciples he will send the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of truth. The battle between Jesus and the world has been won!
The Holy Spirit will be ever present, everywhere, every time, endowed with all the attributes of God to see us safely home.
He is Paraclete; Counselor and Helper called to our side, personal and indwelling.
He is Comforter; Jesus said, “I will not leave you comfortless.” (John 14:26)
He is Advocate; Consoles and intercedes on our behalf, refutes evil and ignorance, misunderstandings others may have about us, and about God. He heals our soul at its deepest level and gives us peace beyond our understanding.
He is a flame of fire, while deceptively tender and polite, he convicts us of the sin of unbelief.
He is our Ruach, (breath of spirit.) In the beginning God breathed and man became a living soul. (Genesis 2:7)
He is our unifier; He creates a fellowship of love, of oneness and reconciliation to channel his power as promised to those who respond to the gospel message.
He cleanses the Body of Christ; “Lord our God, your grace is a purifying fire!”
Most powerful Holy Spirit come down upon us and subdue us. From heaven, where the ordinary is made glorious, and glory seems but ordinary. Bathe us with the brilliance of your light like dew. (Celtic Daily Prayer)
