March 29 - Be Alert! Claim God's Promises

Mark 13:1-8; 24-37

What a troubling passage!  Note how many times Jesus tells his disciples to be alert:

1.  v. 9 (okay, technically not in the 'assigned' reading) - Be on your guard.
2.  v. 33:  Be on guard!
3.  v. 34:  Be alert!
4.  v. 35:  Keep watch.
5.  v. 37:  Watch!

These last few weeks, as the corona virus pandemic has swept through the world, it has felt like we have entered a twilight zone.  How can this be happening to us?  Lord, where are you in the midst of the pain, the suffering?  Don't you see how people are afraid?  Why aren't you helping us?

In Mark 13, Jesus was telling his disciples that big changes were coming to the world.

Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.  There will be earthquakes in many places, and famines. (v. 7)

Covid 19 is certainly a huge change for us.  We can't worship in person for some time; many of us have lost jobs; we can't see loved ones or visit with friends; nursing homes and hospitals are closed to visitors.  It is an uncertain, frightening time, filled with anxiety and fear.

And yet, Jesus tells us this:

He will send his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens.  (v. 27.

That reminds me of the words of comfort from Psalm 91:4

He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection. (Living Translation)

And verse 31 has words of hope as well:

Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.

Lord, this is an unsettling time. We are watchful and on guard. We claim your protection and your promises. Help us to rest in the sure knowledge that you are on the throne, and that you are faithful. Amen.
