April 7 - Jesus Clears the Temple

Mark 11:12-19

The never-ridden gentle donkey carried Zions King, the Prince of Peace into the city where the Passover Feast was approaching. (Zechariah 9:9) Shouts of Hosanna echoed as Jesus dismounted in route to the Temple.

Immediately into the courts of the temple Jesus’ righteous anger flared as he saw buying and selling, currency exchange, caged animals and transport of merchandise through the temple courts as a shortcut between the city and the Mount of Olives. “Is it not written: “My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations, but you have made it a den or robbers!” (Mark 11:17, Isaiah 56.7)

Perhaps some remembered the anointed child Jesus reading scripture in the Temple at an earlier Passover Feast. Who was this man now cracking a whip, turning over tables and emptying the courtyard! “For zeal for your house consumes me and the insults of those who insult you fall on me.” (Psalm 69:9)

At the building of the Temple, King Solomon had declared the Temple to be a house of prayer for all nations (The Court of the Gentiles) assuring non-Jews and foreigners’ access to the Temple to worship God. (1 Kings 8:41-43)

Our bodies are the temple of the sovereign Holy Spirit. At Easter resurrection celebration, we offer ourselves for cleansing of sacred places as Jesus cleared the Temple in Jerusalem. He offered himself as our sacrifice once and for all as our Pass-over blood covering.

“Whiter than snow, whiter than snow. Now wash me and I shall be whiter than snow.” (James L. Nicholson)

"No," said Peter, "you shall never wash my feet." Jesus answered, "Unless I wash you, you have no part with me." "Then, Lord," Simon Peter replied, "not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!" (John 13:8-9)
