May 10 - New Life at the Oasis

Acts 17:1-19 and 1 Thessalonians 1:1-10

At UALC, we've been focusing on becoming "oasis Christians." The oasis is a place of refreshment and rest, and it is open to all - there are no gates or moats preventing outsiders from joining us at God's oasis.  Last week we looked at the oasis at the city of Philippi, where Paul and his companions shared the gospel with people who were eager to hear it.

This week, we're looking at the new church in Thessalonica, an important city in northern Greece.  Paul and Timothy preached the gospel in Jesus' name at the synagogue in this town, and some Jews and "a large number of God-fearing Greeks and not a few prominent women" became believers.  But the Jewish leaders were jealous of Paul's success, so they formed a mob to run Paul out of town - and they were successful.

So Paul did not get to spend the time that he wanted to disciple these new believers.  But, in God's timing and in His grace, the young Thessalonian church grew.  Paul writes them a letter, and he thanks God for their faith, their love, and their hope (I Thessalonians 1:3).  Are there things that the church still needs to learn?  Yes, indeed.  They have some large gaps in their understanding of their new faith.  But they have grasped what's most important, and their faith in God has become known everywhere (I Thessalonians 1:7b).

We could have a long conversation about the importance of biblical theology.  I am so grateful for the many opportunities I have at our church to study the Bible. In these pandemic times, we have even more chances to soak in God's word through "UALC on the 9s."  And there are ongoing Bible studies, small groups, and Bible-focused classes.

These things are Very Important, and we don't want to lead young Christians astray with faulty theology. However, we need to remember to put First Things First. And to not get so caught up in 'getting it right' that we neglect to share our faith with others. (What if I make a mistake?? What if I don't use the right language??)

My friends, we have neighbors, friends, and family members who are lost. They have the vague sense that their life is not fulfilling, but they may not know where to turn. And you and I know where to find Real Joy, Real Hope, Real Life.  We can share that Joy with others.  Ask God to give you the faith to step out and share the good news. He will give you the words. There is plenty of room at the oasis.
