1 Thessalonians 2:1-16
"...but with the help of our God we dared to tell you his gospel in the face of strong opposition. 3 For the appeal we make does not spring from error or impure motives, nor are we trying to trick you. 4 On the contrary, we speak as those approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel. We are not trying to please people but God, who tests our hearts." (1 Thessalonians 2:3-4)
These words are part of a conversation Paul had with the Thessalonians. He is defending himself against attacks on his integrity by Jewish enemies. Imagine what is going on to cause Paul to defend himself as he is. The genuineness of his motives is challenged. He is accused of being no different than other wondering philosophers and teachers of his day; those who taught and spoke only to receive money and praise.
Paul's words of truth and love can be helpful to us, as we are caught in this time-warp of sorts. Each day like the last unless we are deliberate to make them meaningful, fresh and exciting. If you are like many of us these days, you might discover yourself questioning the motives of politicians and lawmakers. Are the new rules governing our lives stifling are actions necessary? Are they motivated out of love and concern, or is this a power-play?
Questions like these plague my mind, but as a rule follower, I want to err on the side of what is right and good. Jesus is the only answer here. When I find myself slipping into a day of depression, I must pull myself together and trust God has all this under His control. I know there is only one place truth will be found and that is in His Word. I find strength and peace when I turn to my Bible and read.
As we search for the oasis in every day and every situation, let's keep looking for that breath of fresh air. Seek out that bright spot in a day of mundane happenings. Ask Jesus to fill that gap in our lives and see what a difference it will make.
