The first time I read this verse, I was a newish mom, whose neighbor had just invited me to a MOPS (Mothers of PreSchoolers) meeting at her church. The MOPS theme that year was based on this Scripture. As I entered her church for my first MOPS meeting, I noticed a sign that read “Twinkle,” with the subheading of “Shine like stars in the universe.” At the time, I didn’t grasp how significant this invitation and acceptance would be to my Christian journey.
My neighbor Michelle was a strong believer, and her life displayed the joy of a relationship with Christ. She made walking with Jesus attractive and contagious. Later, it was Michelle who invited me to my first Bible Study. With a bit more hesitation I agreed to join my first-ever Bible study of the book of Joshua and my relationship with Jesus exploded.
In verses 14-16, of this Scripture, I think Paul is encouraging us to live more like my friend Michelle did at that time in my life: grow your faith...remember God is working good in your life...be the light that someone needs to see...mentor others.
Particularly in our present times, we have a huge opportunity to shine like stars amongst the darkness. This shining doesn’t mean denying the reality of difficult times, but holding on to the hope of Jesus despite the difficulties we all face.
Instead of complaining, we can bring hope to those who are suffering. Instead of grumbling to others (grumble to God, he can take it!), bring joy. Be a light in a dark place. Love others who are hurting. Share Jesus and offer grace. You never know where it will lead in someone’s journey toward Christ!
