Paul is writing to the church in Corinth,
a church surrounded by the practice of pagan idolatry. His command and warning
to them is stark – flee! He tells them to run from idolatry. As you study, reflect on why Paul is so concerned about the danger of this sin.

REFLECTION
There is Nothing New
By Judy Webb
For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers, and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea. (1 Corinthians 10:1 NIV)
I get excited when
I read scripture and I can draw a parallel to what is happening around me as well
as what is going on in society. It seems we are living under a cloud right now.
So much is changing and upsetting our world that it is difficult to not feel
afraid. It is challenging to move forward with confidence and faith that Jesus
will handle things.
In fact, He knew
all the situations we find ourselves surrounded by and he knew they would be a factor
for us and for our faith. He knew the pandemic would happen as well as the
racial device that is widening. He knew how we would react – individually and
as a nation. He knew. He knows the future. He is the future.
The Israelites got
a glimpse of their future in The Promised Land, and they ran from it. They
forgot all that God had done for them to this point. They allowed fear to
override their faith. As a result, they wandered forty years in the desert. We
can learn from them. We can turn our fears about tomorrow over to God.
Any
temptation you face will be nothing new. But God is faithful, and He will not
let you be tempted beyond what you can handle. But He will always provide a way
of escape so that you will be able to endure and keep moving forward. (1
Corinthians 14:13 VOICE)
The situation we
are in right now is nothing new. Just as the Israelites had a choice to cast
aside fear and turn them over to God, so do we. Let’s do that, let’s come
together and give our worries about tomorrow to The One who is already there.
