DAILY READING
DEVOTION / REFLECTION
Love, Listen, Latch on
by Judy Webb
Now choose life, so that you and
your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him.
(Deuteronomy 30:19-20) These words were spoken by
Moses as he addressed the Israelites, and passed the baton to Joshua. He was
encouraging them to stay the course, keep the faith, and trust and obey God.
For years I would
seek God’s Word for me each morning. I begin by writing my thoughts to God in a
journal and ask for a Word, just for me this day. In fact, I write it so often
in my journal that now I merely jot down, “Do you have A.W.F.M.T? (a Word for
me today) Anyone reading my journals down the road might be puzzled by this acronym,
but it is very meaningful for me. God usually has a Word, and He shares it
freely.
Many times, when
I had been praying for direction, or answers, I would see the words, Trust
and Obey. Sometimes I even would hear that old hymn being played on the
radio (believe it or not) and then again a devotion or scripture is placed
before me which has this command. I have learned over the years that these
three words are to be heeded by me. They used to signify a major happening or
life change. More recently they would alert me to the fact that God was trying
to get my attention. Now days, they mostly reassure me that God is listening
and hearing. These words tell me to stay the course, my path is secure for now.
When I encounter
this phrase, I have my eyes and my ears wide open in anticipation. “Now
choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God, listen
to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the Lord is your
life…” (verse 19b-20a). To love
and trust God means to obey his voice.
PRAYER PRACTICE
Dear Jesus, Keep me close to you and ever whisper the phrase Trust and Obey, as I want to continue to do just that.
