Tooth Fairy - fact or fiction

“I am the LORD your God, who brought you up out of Egypt…” (Leviticus 11:44)

As I age, it seems that I spend a good deal of my budget on the upkeep of my teeth. They are a necessary part of daily living and who wouldn’t be lost without them? It is important to keep the tooth fairy at bay. As with many things in life, I find I regret not spending more time caring for them. Perhaps it wouldn’t be so costly now.

Wisdom comes with experience and with age and I am in the stage of life where I appreciate things; ordinary things, much more than years ago. Now, I am interested in keeping the moving parts moving. I am concerned about diet and exercise more than ever, but mostly I am in tuned with the spiritual aspect of my being. My relationship with Jesus is where I discover peace. It is where I develop a new outlook on life and its values.

Inevitably life changes. Retirement looms, and all the changes that come with it. Selling a house, moving to a new location, counting pennies… But, God is in all these moments. They don’t come as a surprise to him, and if I have been keeping close to His Word, they don’t surprise me either. God and I have been having these conversations for some time now. He has been preparing me, walking with me and encouraging me that the best is yet to come.

Worship of God in the morning, before I even brush my teeth, is part of my routine. Conversation with Jesus gets me going in the right direction and helps me recognize His presence throughout the day and the value of same. These ordinary everyday practices stand out as part of my worship.

Leviticus 11:44-45

Joshua 22:1-9

Seven years earlier, before the conquests in the Promised Land, Moses gave land east of the Jordan to the Reubenites, Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh, but they had to promise to first to carry out the mission of the LORD. (Joshua 22:3)  All these years these tribes were faithful to Moses, Joshua and the LORD.  Now the mission was accomplished and it was time to claim their rightful inheritance.

“Return to your homes with your great wealth—with large herds of livestock, with silver, gold, bronze and iron, and a great quantity of clothing—and divide with your brothers the plunder from your enemies.” (Joshua 22:8 NIV)

The Message Bible puts it this way, "All this time and right down to this very day you have not abandoned your brothers; you've shouldered the task laid on you by GOD, your God."   This verse reminds of the line in Scripture we all long to one day hear, "Well done, good and faithful servant." (Matthew 25:21)

This is the period in one's life when we look back at everything that has happened to bring us to this turning point and decide it is time to flip to a new page in our book, to begin the next chapter.  I am drawn to compare it to a retirement of sorts.  The battles fought in the early portion of life, which required physical stamina have been won.  It is now time to claim the prize; a bit of rest and relaxation or, at least opportunity to work for ourselves.  It is the season when dreams are followed and passions pursued.

Now, granted, it doesn't always work out the way we planned  it.  Often it looks very different than our dreams portrayed, but it is another season, another opportunity to serve God and man. Next we will see how this turns out; any guess?
