What you see is what you get

Genesis 1:31 (NIV)  God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.

When reading through today's selection I am struck by the fact that God created us in His image and it is very good.  He said so!  When I begin to look at myself with dissatisfaction, when I see a reflection in the mirror that doesn't please me, I have to remember these words. God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.

That doesn't just apply to me; no it applies to you as well.  Is there something about you, your looks, or your way, that you don't like?  Well, God does and we need to remember that. There is a saying young children often use, "God doesn't make junk."  When we take a moment to consider this, it is true and we would do well to think of this the next time our minds begin to judge another's looks or features.

There was a time I would justify not going to church on Sunday with the words, "it's just a fashion show." Sound familiar? Maybe we still feel that way sometimes but we would be wise to remember the only one we are putting on a show for is God. And our show is all behind the scenes for God knows our heart.

As a child I would sit in the back of the room whenever possible, never raise my hand in class or do anything to call attention to myself.  Our family didn't have much money and our wardrobe attested to that fact.  As children, we don't see clearly, we don't understand what is truly important.  I would admire the girls who wore the latest fashions, thinking how nice they looked. Not really coveting their outfits, but never feeling adequate either.

Perhaps this is why the words, God saw all that he had made, and it was very good, speak to me.  Now that I am an adult I see how foolish my childhood ways were. God loves me and you just where we are right now.  He knows He doesn't make junk and He wants us to know that too.
