The Gift John 4:10-18

Have you ever watched a young child open a birthday present, examine it a bit and then set it off to the side, only to play with the box it came in and not the gift itself? I need not have gone to all the work of finding the perfect gift, when a simple box would have done just as nicely.

The youngster doesn’t recognize the value in the gift. The container may have held books or perhaps a first bike; but the child’s youth and inexperience makes it difficult to appreciate the gift. By playing with the box they are missing the point.

The Samaritan woman, who was talking to Jesus at Jacob’s well, was like the child mentioned above. She didn’t see the gift she was offered, the Living Water, she saw only the packaging – the man. Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water."(John 4:10) The woman’s inexperience with God kept her from recognizing who Jesus was and what He was offering.

Heavenly Father,

Today, I want to open my eyes and my heart to the precious gift, of Your Son, the Living Water. He is offering me the life-giving, thirst quenching, refreshing gift of eternal life. Please show me how to us this gift for Your glory. Amen.
