The Peace That Passes Understanding Romans 8:18-39

I remember sitting by my father’s bedside with my mother, sister and Pastor John a few weeks before my father died. My father’s physical demeanor changed as soon as John started talking with him. John spoke to my father about simple things and he spoke to him of eternity. My dad soaked in every scripture John read. Today’s passage was one that John read.

“And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

These are words of absolute assurance for not only my father, but our entire family. Knowing that my father was not going to be with us much longer was beyond sad, but knowing that not even death would separate him from God gave us all peace.

We ended our visit together reading more scripture, sharing communion and praying together. It was such a blessed experience that I will remember forever.
