Acts 6:9-15

“None of them could stand against the wisdom and the Spirit with which Stephen spoke. So they persuaded some men to lie about Stephen”(Acts 6)

The previous sentence gives me the shivers. We have been in the book of Acts, exploring the power of the Holy Spirit. We have seen the Holy Spirit loosen the tongue and open the ears crossing language barriers. We have seen thousands come to Christ, unity, generosity, and miraculous intervention. Today we will see another effect of the Spirit.

If you have been a part of a church you have probably seen how the lack of the Holy Spirit can drive others to do some pretty nasty things. We see in our passage today that those without the Holy Spirit could not stand against the wisdom of the Spirit so the only thing they could do was lie.

The world will not understand us when the Spirit is at work. We are called to live counter culturally and that will be confusing to many. Our job is to understand the effect we can have on others and stand firm in the knowledge that we are serving God and not man.
