Acts 19:23-41

Is Jesus good for business?  The scripture story today tells us of a business man whose trade was making statues and shrines of the local and popular gods.  Evidently it was a lucrative trade, as he and others were very upset with Jesus' followers because they were putting a damper on their business.

About that time there arose a great disturbance about the Way. A silversmith named Demetrius, who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought in a lot of business for the craftsmen there....There is danger not only that our trade will lose its good name, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be discredited; and the goddess herself, who is worshiped throughout the province of Asia and the world, will be robbed of her divine majesty.” (Acts 19:23-24,27)

According to The Life Application Commentary Demetrius and his fellow craftsman had not quarreled with Paul's doctrine.  They only became concerned when his preaching threatened their profits.  How often do I do the same thing, go along with Jesus' teaching and encourage others to do the same, until that practice gets in the way of my checkbook; then you better watch out.

This lesson points out to me that Jesus wants to be part of our entire life, every waking minute of every day of our life.  He requires us to include Him in our work life, our home life and our social life.  So, is Jesus good for business?  Without Him, without the Holy Spirit to call upon in life, including my work life, I would have no business.
