Joshua 6

Then the Lord said to Joshua, “See, I have delivered Jericho into your hands, along with its king and its fighting men. (Joshua 6:2)

These words must have given Joshua a sense of confidence like he never had before. God was telling him the enemy was already defeated. Now, the people of Jericho had confidence too because their city was known as impenetrable. Jericho was a mighty fortress with fortified walls 25 feet high and 20 feet thick. Jericho was a symbol of military power and strength and considered invincible.

Jericho was the first city the Israelite soldiers took, and it was an important victory because it's destruction would put the fear of Israel into the heart of every person in Canaan. The manner in which the city was defeated left no doubt that God was in charge. Only God could defeat the strong and formidable enemy in such strange way.

When the trumpets sounded, the army shouted, and at the sound of the trumpet, when the men gave a loud shout, the wall collapsed; so everyone charged straight in, and they took the city. (Joshua 6:20)
God tells us the enemy has been defeated too. He has let us know that Satan will not win the war for our souls. His eternal damnation is set and it is only a matter of time before he takes his place in the depths of despair. We as Christians, still fight battles daily, but the war has been won. We can take comfort and be strengthened in the knowledge that Jesus has saved the day for us. Because He came and did battle with the enemy, we don't have to.

But, like Joshua's soldiers, we have to believe what our Commander says and we must obey His orders. When the trumpet sounds, we will shout for joy, knowing that battle has been won.
