The Story - Chapter 1 - Genesis 6

The fall of man through the sin of Adam and Eve changed everything forevermore.  As a human living in the 21st century it is difficult to imagine life as it first was; it is nearly impossible to understand that sin did not always populate the world.  Since the beginning of time, we were created in God’s image as perfect beings with free-will.

My mind is filled with the words of Joshua.  "But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD."  (Joshua 24:15)

Had God not given us the power or right to choose, we would not be living in a sin-filled world, but we could also be living a dull and robotic existence.  Now, that might not be your image of life in the Garden of Eden, but it strikes me that if God made us in His image, He made us to love Him and love is a choice.

It is free will, the option to choose who we will love, who we will serve, that makes us different from the animals.  We can decide for ourselves which God to follow, which rules to obey, and how to live out our life on this earth.  Because Adam and Eve chose to pursue fame and fortune; to be like God” (Genesis 3:5) they immediately had their eyes opened to the reality of their sin.  We might try to put all the blame on these two individuals for all of our woes and troubles, but we too have free will.

Then came Noah who also had free will, and he chose God.

“Noah did everything just as God commanded him.” (Genesis 6:22)

What about you?  Me? Everyday we are given choices.  Everyday we exercise the options we have before us because of the gift of free will. Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve.
