The Story      Chapter 6      Wandering

Deuteronomy 29-31, 34

In Chapter 29 the covenant between God and the Israelites was renewed. He reminded them of all He had done for them, and directed them to carefully follow the terms of the covenant "so that you may prosper in everything you do."

Chapter 30 tells of the prosperity and blessings the Israelites experienced after turning to the Lord. Then he offered them life or death. God told them that what was asked of them was truly within their capability. He did not say it would be easy. "For I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in His ways, and to keep his commands, decrees and laws; then you will live and increase and the Lord your God will bless you in the land you are entering to possess. But if your heart turns away................."

As The Story continues into chapter 31, God reveals to Moses that his time to leave the earth is near. This is where Joshua is called, and he and Moses stand before the Lord for direction. Joshua is appointed to fill the shoes of this great man. Soon after that meeting, in the presence of all Israel Moses declared to Joshua; Be strong and courageous,........ The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged." There were likely skeptics in the camp, as there always is when new leadership is assigned. Of course  there were also devoted followers, but as is true today, it only takes a few to corrupt the multitudes. In Chapter 34 Moses, the servant of the lord died. Joshua was up for the challenge, but at that time did not have a clue what was in store for them all.

God has expectations of us. He has reminded, warned, declared and proclaimed a multitude of times how we are to conduct ourselves. He has been doing so for hundreds of years. Sometimes I wonder why we can't just obey, but am soon reminded of this world and it's ways and it becomes clear. As Christ followers we must be the example--day by day, hour by hour, minute by minute. We cannot waiver and we most certainly cannot conform. We must not let our hearts turn away as so many do.  Just as He was then, still today He is the way, the truth and the light. Amen!
