We have been reading and talking about not allowing other gods to be part of our lives. Discussions naming those other gods has taken place in our living rooms during small group time and anywhere we are meeting to talk about The Story. We have named a few of these gods, like money, power, work, even some relationships.
Anything that takes over our hearts and our minds and keeps us from communing with the One True God is an idol. Idolatry will keep us from God and this truth is so important we hear it over and over again. It is vital we recognize that idol worship was not only prevalent during the time of Moses, but is still a stumbling block for us today. How do we overcome this?
Deuteronomy 6:4-7 (NIV)
"Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up."
For us to be right with God we must recognize his omnipotence. God is the creator of our world and the only giver of life. As such we owe Him our loyal worship and praise, all the time. We are instructed to teach our children to know and love God too. This isn’t so much an assignment as a way of living. The Story of God’s unending love for us is worth telling over and over.
Had the Israelites followed Moses’ example and direction they would not have had to spend 40 years wandering. Perhaps we could eliminate years off of our wandering if we followed his example too. Thinking back, is it obvious where your wandering has taken you, the paths that were followed that would be been best ignored? I can think of a number of choices I wish I hadn't made. But this isn't about our regrets, but our tomorrows.
Every day is a new day, every morning an opportunity for a fresh start to “Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.”
