God is all you need; this is what I am hearing in the first ten verses of Isaiah 54. The words are speaking to the barren and the otherwise broken people of the world. He is promising redemption for everyone who does not reject Him, but turns to Him. God is speaking to His people Israel, but to us also. Our nature is one of sin, filled with selfish ambition. God promised redemption and He delivered.
By Jesus’ appearance in our world, all of God’s promises were about to be fulfilled; His love took on the form of a Baby. As we prepare our hearts to receive this precious gift, as we remember the season so many years ago, it is appropriate we ponder, as Mary did, all these things in our heart.
Isaiah 54:10 (NIV)
“Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed," says the LORD, who has compassion on you.”
Has something shaken your world this past year? Do you find yourself in a different place emotionally, spiritually, financially, or even physically? There are many ways our mountains may be shaken, but God’s promise remains constant. What is different for you this Christmas season, what has changed that makes this holiday different from last year?
Perhaps another person has been added to your family, a baby always changes the dynamics of our tradition. Maybe ‘empty-nester’ is your new normal; this too changes the dynamics of the Christmas season traditions. Perhaps you are making new traditions, keeping some of the former, but adding different rituals to your family time.
By remembering and observing the real reason for this season of love and family togetherness, whatever our customs, God will bless us.
