Luke 1: 26-38 The Annunciation

“I didn't ask for this! What am I supposed to do now? Who’s going to believe it? I can’t! Why me? What will everyone think? Will Joseph understand? Of course he won’t…..”
Mary was visited by an angel and given the most unbelievable and unimaginable news possible. Did this messenger from heaven abruptly appear in the darkness of her home, in a flowing gown with blinding rays of light surrounding him? Perhaps the proclamation took place under a crescent moon as Mary sat beneath a tree planning for her wedding, and a gentle stranger quietly approached and sat beside her. No matter what, Mary was stunned by the news of a gift she had not asked for. Her heart was quieted, and pulse likely slowed when she heard; “Do not be afraid Mary, you have found favor with God….” Yet this gift, the most precious and important gift of all time was not anticipated, solicited, or even imagined in her wildest dreams! But it was true, and her destiny was set. Her impact on the world, profound. Mary’s life journey was nothing short of heartbreaking, but as most mothers will say, worth every trial.

We have all been given gifts we did not ask for. Because of our talents and blessings, we may be lead to places we do not choose, or did not anticipate. None the less, they are God given, and He expects us to use them for the good of His kingdom. As we took our first breath upon entering this world, we were babes, totally unaware of our future and dependent on the adults in our lives. As we grow, our gifts are slowly revealed. Some are obvious, yet others more subtle. Those quiet, somewhat hidden gifts, if identified and nurtured can have an enormous impact on others. Think about your gifts. The ones you keep for yourself or your family alone. Those that may give you pleasure, but you feel no one else would appreciate.

Mary possessed God given talents and virtues that He used to change the world. We all have such gifts. Mary didn't know, but we do.
