The Story - Chapter 18 - Daniel 1

I love the book of Daniel. It was the very first book I studied many years ago. I didn't understand it the first time through, but each time I read it, I begin to grasp a bit more. I look forward to learning even more this week, and applying it to my life this day.

Daniel 1:8-9 (NIV)
"But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way. Now God had caused the official to show favor and sympathy to Daniel,"

I have been struggling with my diet, with my eating habits. This has been an area of challenge for me most of my life, even as a child. I resolved this year to change all that with the help of God. That is the key phrase here, ‘with the help of God’. Even though this has been a New Year’s resolution of mine many times, I vowed this year to be different.

Reading verses 8 and 9 I am reminded and encouraged to continue this endeavor. Daniel is a superb model for me to follow. If he, a child really, can stick to his beliefs and not conform or bow to Satan’s temptations, why can’t I. The Life Application Bible Notes say, “Daniel was determined to be devoted to principle and to be committed to a course of action.” That is how I need to be…DETERMINED, DEVOTED, and COMMITTED.

How will you use the Scripture readings from today in your life? In what area do you need and want to be determined, devoted and committed. Is there something you are determined to change? Is there a behavior you are devoted to practice? Is there a habit you are committed to break? The response, “Yes and I ask God to help and guide me.”
