The Terminator

Do you remember in "Terminator 2: Judgement Day" how the bad guy could transform himself into any person that he comes into contact with? Not only that, but he could melt himself down into metal and then back into human form. The bad girl in "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines" could do the same thing. How did Arnold ever win? But, even a more important question is why do I bring this up?

Ezekiel 1:27 describes the figure of a man that from the waist up looked like glowing metal – a.k.a. "The Terminator". In reality, this is the glory of the Lord and when Ezekiel sees Him, he falls facedown.

This is the story of Ezekiel’s calling. In chapter 2 God tells Ezekiel several times to not be afraid. Then in chapters 6 and 7 we understand why because we learn what message Ezekiel is to take to Israel. It is a very clear message of the judgement that Israel is to suffer. This includes famine and death by sword. Ezekiel 7:2 says: "Son of man, this is what the Sovereign Lord says to the land of Israel: the end! The end has come upon the four corners of the land."

You’ve got to admit that this is not a very positive message. It’s no wonder that the Lord kept telling Ezekiel not to be afraid. But somehow he mustered the courage and was obedient to God’s call on his life. We can only imagine how he felt - the fear that must have gripped his heart at times. How easy it would have been to rationalize and not obey God’s call.

Most likely God hasn’t called you to deliver such a message. But maybe at times, it is just as difficult for you to obey Him. What should you do then? Ezekiel 2:1 says: "He said to me, ‘Son of man, stand up on your feet and I will speak to you’. As he spoke, the Spirit came into me and raised me to my feet, and I heard him speaking to me."

During those times when we are tempted to go our own way, we need to listen to Him and to draw close to Him. When we do that, His Spirit will lift us up and give us the strength to face the world in front of us. We won’t need Arnold to protect us because the Living God promises to be with us always.
