These two chapters are an exciting read. The story is one made for the movies. There is intrigue, mystery, betrayal and passion inside this portion of Esther.
This story can be likened to some scenarios today and make for exciting reading. The story unfolds with Mordecai refusing to kneel down and pay honor to Haman, one of the king's nobles. Of course Haman's pride wouldn't stand for this obstinate behavior, plus he recognized a golden opportunity to rid the land of the Jews he hated so much.
Esther 3:9 (NIV)
"If it
pleases the king, let a decree be issued to destroy them, and I will put ten
thousand talents of silver into the royal treasury for the men who carry out
this business."
Because, it would seem kings did not have a mind of their own, Haman's bold request was granted. The plan was to annihilate all the Jews--young and old--on a single day. Moving into chapter 4 we find Mordecai explaining to Queen Esther (his niece) of the slaughter that was scheduled to take place. It is during this give and take that one of my most favorite verses of the Bible can be found.
Esther 4:14 (NIV)
"For if
you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise
from another place, but you and your father's family will perish. And who knows
but that you have come to royal position for such a time as this?"
Have you ever found yourself in a situation totally foreign to you; in a spot so alien you cannot imagine how anything good could possibly result? Then someone explains it to you and uses the words, “for such a time as this.” Life will often give challenges to us that make no sense what so ever. But if we plow through, doing our best or making the best out of a bad situation by praying and trusting; God will reveal just enough so that we can see the timing...His timing and His hand moving us into the fray.
