The first short term mission trip I participated in was eye-opening in so many respects. For example I understood, like never before, the beatitude below.
Matthew 5:3 (NIV)
"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."
While riding in the back of an old beat-up pickup truck decked out with welded handrails around the perimeter and through the middle I could get a good view of the countryside. As we turned sharp corners and all of us grabbed hold of a handrail, we experienced first-hand, the beautiful, breathtaking scenery around us. We also were able to interact with those who lived in the villages. We could see them face to face, we could look into the eyes of the children and the elderly and see happiness.
These lovely people were so poor, I had difficulty understanding how they could live as they did. I was blinded by the thoughts of anyone having to live without modern conveniences. How foolish, and maybe even pompous of me. I recognized these people did not know they were poor; therefore they were not. They were so rich in family love, and possessed a peaceful acceptance of life that I could only dream of having.
They were filled with joy, not worry. These beautiful people I came to serve, served me in a way they will never know. They showed me that material things have so little true value. They taught me by example to embrace each day and be thankful to God for all He has given. "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."
