Acts 2: 1-21

The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost

Knowing He was going to leave this world, Jesus promised the Holy Spirit would come and enter into the hearts of His followers to guide them and be with them….always.
In Acts 2, a phenomenon occurred that would be very difficult to believe even if you were actually there. Scripture says, “Suddenly a sound like the blowing of violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.” The disciples of Jesus were given the gift of the Holy Spirit, and those observing accused them of having too much wine. It seemed such an absurd occurrence the only explanation was wine.

Peter then addressed the crowd to explain what was happening. In Acts 2:17-21 Paul said, “In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams……and everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

This is the moment the Holy Spirit was sent to us as promised. It was an out of the ordinary entrance to say the least, but illustrates the intense power and presence that we must realize. The Holy Spirit is within us and among us now just the same as then. The promise of the Spirit was fulfilled, and we are given the strength we need to carry on in His name!
