Ephesians 4:1-16 - The ascended Christ gives light

There are a number of familiar verses in the selected reading for this day and we are going to concentrate on this one; "Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace."  (Ephesians 4:3) This brief statement of unity has some power-house words in it.

There are lots of marks, notes and highlighting in Ephesians 4 in my Bible. I must have participated in a number of studies on this which leads me to believe it must be significant to a Christian's walk.

The word - keep, in this context refers to being quick at mending fences. Throughout history, ranchers have had to be aware of any broken fence for that would mean there was the likelihood of losing valuable property. If enough is lost, everything could fall apart.  Not only that, but when fences were not repaired regularly before long there would be so much damage done that it would take a monumental task to repair or replace.

I think you can see where I am going with this. When there is brokenness in our lives, we are no longer walking in sync with one another, but we are so off balance that when we walk side-by-side swinging our arms, they bang into each other.  It is the Holy Spirit who keeps banded together.  It is the Holy Spirit who leads us to unity because He knows it is the only way we will draw others to Christ.

The word - bond, refers to a band that holds things together. It is the bond of peace; that band that will stretch to draw outsiders to the Christian life. Are there some fences that need our attention today?  Do we need to work on a relationship, ask for forgiveness or grant someone grace?  Let's hold out a hand of unity and grasp the hand of peace as we walk into this day.
