The scene begins with the hero riding in on a white horse, the crowd begins to react with cheers and clapping. Folks are leaning in, anticipating a great victory, watching the final battle between the good guy and the bad guy. There are a few moments when uncertainty creeps in as things aren't going well for the side of right and of justice.
A few tense moments over take the crowd, fear hangs heavy over the auditorium, and a cloud of sadness momentarily envelopes the audience. Is this the end? Will the people in the black hats win? Silence blankets the room and then...
Revelation 19:11 (NIV)
"I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white
horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and makes
war."
The crowd erupts all at once, cheering and laughing fill the huge room. There is applauding, shouts of, "Yea!" can be heard all around. There is foot-stomping and hand-clapping, loud whistles and a prominent sniffles join a few tears of joy. The bad guys have been defeated and are running for the hills.
This is the scene I see playing out in my mind's eye as I read the Revelation text today. Simplified...perhaps. But oh what a day that will be!
