Matthew 11:28-29 (NIV) "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will
give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and
humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
What a promise to hear when our breath catches in our throat and our cries for relief tunnel their way into being. Those days when the world keeps turning even though ours has come to a grinding halt, this invitation blankets the heart like a winter comforter. Knowing these words are from Jesus' lips gives a brokenhearted Believer reason to hang on to hope.
Those of us who have known moments that threaten to engulf our spirit with overwhelming grief, covet this rest for our souls. When life spins out of control Jesus wants us to know He is there, He feels the pain and desires to give us rest. My Bible has a notation scribbled in the margin next to, "and I will give you rest," which reads, I will recover your life.
Isn't that just what we need when all seems lost? Isn't that what we cry out for when we are sinking into the quicksand of life? The rest promised in these words is love, healing and peace with God. We are not promised escape from the burden, but spiritual productivity and purpose which provides respite, and rest for the weary.
