After Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt, and into the desert, they traveled for three days without finding water. When they arrived in Marah, their relief was quickly turned to disappointment.
Exodus 15:23-24 "When they came to Marah, they could not drink its water because it was bitter. (That is why the place is called Marah.) So the people grumbled against Moses, saying, 'What are we to drink?”'
It's scary to be in a situation where you are completely reliant on God, waiting for Him to provide. But God called the Isrealites to leave Egypt. He parted the Red Sea so they could escape Pharaoh's army! God was on their side. And yet, they feared He wouldn't provide for their basic needs.
Exodus 15:25a "Then Moses cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a piece of wood. He threw it into the water, and the water became fit to drink."
What a great reminder that when we cry out to God in need, He responds. He knows our needs before we ask. And sometimes, He waits until we are in a place of dire need to respond. Maybe to remind us that He is the Great provider. He wants us to rely on Him in every way.
God speaks in Exodus 15:26 "There the Lord issued a ruling and instruction for them and put them to the test. He said, 'If you listen carefully to the Lord your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, who heals you.'"
The Lord loves His children. We are His, and He delights in providing for us. It's an amazing experience to call out to God in need, and to see Him respond. Trust Him with your life. If He leads you into the desert, remember that He won't let you go thirsty!
