Span the Ditches of Doubt

There are times when I read through my old journal entries and realize my actions aren't much different than the Israelites' who followed Moses out of captivity.

I have seen God in action, I have been the beneficiary of His grace and His provision yet I complain, question and criticize. I have seen God in action for my benefit yet I doubt and distrust at the first sign of trouble.

In our reading today we find the Israelite people facing danger and inconvenience and they moan, “If only we had died by the LORD’s hand in Egypt!” If you have been reading from Exodus you have been witness to God’s provisions for His people. You have seen the miracles He has performed on their behalf, yet they doubt again.

Can you relate? Has God brought you through a wilderness, maybe even one of your own making, only to forget what a loving God we serve? Human nature hasn't changed, and sin is still prevalent today. The Israelites were rescued from the chains of slavery and walked through the waters of the Red Sea as God laid out a path right before their eyes, and still they distrust and grumble.

God’s people didn't mean everything they were saying, they were afraid and wanted a smoother road to travel. Who doesn't? The pressure they were feeling caused them to act out. We do the same, don’t we?

The next time pressure or stress threaten to overcome, let’s resist the temptation to for a quick fix. Instead let’s focus on God’s power and ask for wisdom to navigate the road ahead instead of jumping into the ditch with hands clasped over our heads.
