Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither- whatever they do prospers.
- Psalm 1:1-3
A tree firmly rooted in rich soil, overflowing with luscious
greens and life abundant. Streams that never dry, bearing fruit that satisfies
the appetite. A picture of plenty. Contentment. Fullness. Sounds good, doesn't
it? "Blessed is the one who..." Each new day our arms stretch and our
roots stretch towards something. We're thirsty. Longing for quenched thirst,
and hungry to satisfy the appetite of discontent. This world tends to suck us
dry and leave us feeling withered, crippled and weary; willing to consume
anything that promises to satisfy. Yet as roots are made for water, so our
souls are made for the Lord.
"For as the rain and the snow come
down from Heaven, and do not
return there without watering the Earth and making
it bear and sprout,
and furnishing seed to the sower and bread to the eater; so
will my Word be which goes
forth from My mouth; it will not return to Me empty,
without accomplishing what I desire,
and without succeeding in the matter for
which I sent it."
Isaiah 55:10-11
God's promise is for the one who doesn't reach for the world, but delights in the Word of God. The one who finds purpose and fulfillment in the Lord. Day and night. It's a constant renewal
with a promise attached. A promise of stability, as a trunk is solid and stable.
A promise that as roots reach out from the depths of our soul, God will meet us
with Living Water. A promise that we will yield the fruits of the Spirit,
unwavering and insusceptible to life's harsh winter.
The promises are for you.
