I saw their empty eyes and hollow hearts. The light had
gone from their eyes – the window of the soul. (Reference Matthew 6:22.)
Over
the door of a clinic where I served the homeless were the following words; “we
are all vulnerable to physical and spiritual disease at many crossroads of our
lives.”
What came to mind as I prepared for this scripture
selection is the epidemic spiritual disease of drug addiction in our country.
We see and experience anesthetized spirits at every socioeconomic level. Most of us have at some point made choices that grieved the Holy Spirit and hardened
our hearts.
Evil spirits crave
embodiment. It is our spirit the enemy most wants to possess. Our
minds are the battlefield where we are defeated or victorious. While our bodies and minds are subject to
oppression, they are temporal. Our God-given sacred spirits are eternal.
The Word of God clearly affirms that we are engaged in
combat with an unseen enemy intent on destroying body, mind and spirit. “For
our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against
the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual
forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.” Ephesians 6:17
Satan is a deceiver who cunningly leaves many in their
not-too-bad condition. We may look at them and think “this person could not be
in Satan’s domain.” Every time we proclaim the gospel to a lost soul, a
spiritual battle is raging. Either the person hears the good news but rebels in
disobedience, or hears and becomes part of the kingdom of God’s beloved Son. Colossians 1:13
When the King is in residence in our hearts He is greater
than the one who is of the world. (Reference 1 John 4:4)
Lord
Jesus guide and shelter us from the enemy so that our hearts are never absent
of your Holy Spirit!
