John 8:42-44 (MSG)
"If God
was your father," said Jesus, "you would love me, for I came from God and
arrived here. I didn't come on my own. He sent me. Why can't you understand one word I say? Here's
why: You can't handle it. You're
from your father, the Devil, and all you want to do is please him. He was a
killer from the very start. He couldn't stand the truth because there wasn't a
shred of truth in him. When the Liar speaks, he makes it up out of his lying
nature and fills the world with lies."
Is it any wonder we are so messed up? Is it any wonder we turn to drugs, alcohol, work, or food to find truth and comfort? The one we turn to for clarity and direction is filling our heads and our hearts with lies. That is all he knows. Jesus called him the father of lies. When all we hear all day are lies and empty promises, it's no wonder we seek after those things.
The exciting news is that once we hear about God and are introduced to Jesus, all that changes. So why do Believers still cling to the lies; why is addiction and depression prevalent even in the life of a follower of Jesus? I didn't plan on going here when I started writing this, but seeing as I opened the door, let's step in and see what we can learn.
First, receiving Christ has nothing to do with addiction, or over-eating, or working too much, etc. We live in a broken world and nothing is as it was meant. Jesus' death and resurrection has redeemed us, but we are still sinners. While many of us are able to overcome our issues, escape the addictive life, we never escape our sinful nature.
But, the very best news is that we serve a great big God! A God whose arms are held wide open and just waiting for the moment when we give up, fall back, and take the plunge into the Loving Arms of the Father.
