I John 1:5-8
My 'office roommate' recently had a thorough eye exam at Ohio State's Optometry Clinic. They dilated her pupils to make sure her eyes are healthy, and she returned to the office mid-morning. She asked me if we could turn the office lights off, because the bright light hurt her eyes, even with special sunglasses on. People walked by our office and wondered why we were working in the dark. It was hard to see much beyond my glowing computer screen, and I will admit I was happy when a couple of hours later she said her eyes felt 'ready' for light again.
Let there be light! How hard it was to work in the dark! Light made the difference between working effectively and working....not so well.
Today's passage speaks volumes about light, but not just light to see by and work more productively. Read these words, and let them soak in: "God is light; in him there is no darkness at all....If we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another (I John 1:5b, 7).
What about you? What about me? Are we walking in the light? Have we recognized that God is light, and in him there is no darkness at all? There is no need to dilate our pupils - God is the source of light, the source of love, the source of peace, the source of truth.
Feast on these scriptures:
Your word is a lamp unto my feet, a light unto my path (Psalm 119:105)
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. (John 1:5)
Jesus said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." (John 8:12)
The Lord is my light and my salvation - whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life - of whom shall I be afraid? (Psalm 27:1)
The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. (Revelation 21:23)
I saw that wisdom is better than folly, just as light is better than darkness. (Ecclesiastes 2:13)
Lord, you are the light of the world, and I claim that promise. Help me to walk with you day by day, and to have fellowship with one another. Amen.
