1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well. 2 This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands.
Meeting the needs of people around us who could use our help is how we show our love God. These needs can be as varied as being a friend, providing a meal, praying through illness, smiling at a clerk, etc. We all have hard times when we could use a boost from someone. Obedience to God is carried out when we walk alongside someone.
Just like many good things we do or want to do, we have to be intentional. Our busy lives keep us from observing our neighbors. We move so fast from this activity to another, that we miss seeing what is happening in the lives of people around us. It take intentional living to take notice of someone's need, or pain.
“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ (Matthew 25:40)
Then it takes intentional action to help. Something as simple as a hand-written note to a person you know has just been through a challenging season could make the difference in their day or their week. Meeting needs is often simple stuff. We only need open our eyes, look close, and then act accordingly.1 John 5:1-8
