The Scroll and the Lamb

Revelation 5 draws on Old Testament symbols (the scroll in Ezekiel and sealed books in Isaiah and Daniel) and the number ‘7’ which means complete. These symbols point to God’s ultimate plan of cosmic salvation – his promise to punish evil and restore all of creation. But, the author asks, who is worthy to open the scroll? What do you learn about Jesus as you read this text?

REFLECTION

The Scroll and the Lamb
By Nancy Gleeson

Welcome to the throne room where God is seated holding the scroll that cannot be opened until Jesus is standing there. Jesus is both the Lion and the Lamb who has triumphed over sin. He is the Lion from the line of Judah, the Lion’s cub. There will be a KING and tribute will come to Him! His name will be above every name; every knee shall bow in Heaven and Earth. Just as Jacob promised, the scepter did not depart from Judah's line.

Jesus is the Lamb. This Lion became an innocent animal because honor with God comes through humility. These horns show Jesus’ strength and there are 7 horns which represent completion. Jesus came to procure His Kingdom by overcoming sin and death. Through His resurrection, and because of HIs purpose and His work, Jesus is the only One worthy of opening the scroll.

We need do nothing but WORSHIP!! The proper heavenly response to the fact that Jesus is sovereign over all things is to sing a new song. WORTHY ARE YOU! Jesus has perfect power for He is Omnipotent, Omnipresent, and Omniscient. No one in Heaven or on Earth is like this Lamb.
Amen.
