Interpretation
of these ‘four horsemen’ (a reference back to Zephaniah in the Old Testament)
vary. Some readers see the symbols connecting to events of the
1st century. Others see the horsemen as a warning about suffering to come
at the return of Jesus. Still others point out that the things listed have
taken place frequently throughout history. However one interprets
the timing of these catastrophes, there is little doubt about the
meaning – no events in our world (not even famine, war or disease) are greater
than Jesus.

REFLECTION
The Persecuted Church Grows
by Tom Richards
Today we read about the
seven seals in the book of Revelation. Four
of the seven seals are opened revealing four horses and their riders. These are
the first of three seven-fold numbered series of judgments found in this book. The seven trumpets and the seven bowls are
the other two.
When the first seal is opened,
we discover a white horse and a rider with a bow and a crown. While there are different interpretations
regarding this horse and rider my Concordia Study Bible suggests that they
could represent the “spirit of conquest” through the preaching God’s word.
The second seal reveals a
red horse and its rider with a sword. They represent bloodshed and war; not
necessarily a specific war but wars and “rumors of war” over time.
The third seal is opened,
and we find a black horse with a rider holding a scale. This horse represents
famine.
Finally, the fourth seal
reveals a pale horse. “It’s rider was named Death, and Hades was following
close behind him.” (Revelation 6:8) This horse and rider represent our ultimate
enemy, death.
One only needs to look
over time to see the ravages of the red, black, and pale horses and their
riders. From the trials of the early church to the martyrs of 2020, these forces
have been and will be part of the human experience on earth.
And yet… the conquering
spirit of the gospel (God’s word) has continued to move forward despite these
challenges.
Today, with all the negative news that surrounds us it is
encouraging to learn about God’s word impacting the world. A great example is
Iran! Iran is home to one of the fastest growing “churches” (all Christians in
Iran) in the world. Many other countries are experiencing growth in new
disciples including China and Saudi Arabia. Likewise, the work that we do at
UALC supporting outreach in greater Columbus, the state of Ohio, and the world,
is bearing fruit for the kingdom.
Just as the early church needed encouragement as followers of Jesus, so do we. Revelation provides encouragement by assuring us that Jesus is Lord and God is in control. “Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.” (Hebrews 10:23)
