DAILY READING
DEVOTION / REFLECTION
Greatness begins at home
by Judy Webb
Righteousness exalts a nation,
But sin condemns any people. (Proverbs 14:34)
What makes America great? As a nation founded on Christian principles
and ideals, she was considered great by those who lived here, who came here to
escape oppression, and who thrive here because of these principles. Similarly,
the family unit that worships God and loves and respects one another, prosper
also.
This prosperity isn't because of economic
value, but it is spiritual worth that makes a family thrive; and this same value makes
a country great.
"If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully
follow all his commands I give you today, the Lord your God
will set you high above all the nations on earth. All these blessings will
come on you and accompany you if you obey the Lord your God. You
will be blessed in the city and blessed in the country." (Deuteronomy 28:1-3)
The word 'exalts', refers to the moral value
godly people bring to a county. But, when the evil retain power, injustice
flourishes unbridled. Virtuous leaders can set the tone of justice and values
that are near to the heart of God.
This righteous living begins in the
family unit. It starts with you and me reading God’s Word daily, then telling
our children all we learn. Keep the family strong and the country will follow
suit. Maybe it is time for more of us Christians to run for office.
PRAYER PRACTICE
Spoken Prayer –
Out loud, pray for God to speak to you through your reading. Praise God for
giving us His word. Ask the Spirit to help you read with faith, and to live out
what you hear from God through the passage.
