Justice for All
by Jennifer Jerrome
Whether written by a king or for a king, Psalm 72 asks God
to bestow the gifts of justice and righteousness upon those in charge.
May he judge your people in righteousness, your afflicted
ones with justice (v. 2)
In Solomon’s day, the king often served as judge, jury and
executioner. He held the fate of many men
in his hands and a king who recognized his need for God’s guidance was safeguarding his success.
While the American system is made up of multiple
layers of government, God’s support is still critical. It means more prayers for more people.
Last weekend was the 4th of July, when our country comes together to celebrate. Families and friends gather to eat and watch fireworks. But the past few years have been difficult, and divisions have emerged. The physical dividers that appeared in many public places were a sign of the times, in more ways than one. That’s why I am encouraged by the words of Psalm 72. Promoting the ideas of inclusive kindness and taking care of others is what we need right now.
He will rescue them from oppression and violence, for
precious is their blood in his sight. (v. 14).
We so desperately need those in positions of power to
remember they are there to serve others. Too often “kings” think of their own prosperity before the prosperity of
others. But Jesus was a different kind of king. His blood was our blood and
those who recognize it as a precious gift are the ones fit to hold positions of power.
Lord, in this chaotic world, we pray for all leaders. It is only through your guidance they will succeed and communities will prosper. You and
only you should be the center of power. We
cry out for benevolence. May your wisdom
be our leaders’ wisdom, and may your name endure forever. Amen
