May 22 - Apostles of Christ

1 Corinthians 4:1-5 NIV

Question: How many Christians it takes to change a light bulb? Answer: 10. One to change the bulb, and 9 to say, “We liked the old one better.” Evangelical believers have an opinion about everything and everyone in God’s Church. The judgments often start over Sunday lunch or in the car on the way home from worship. And this is one way the devil distracts us, in order to steal the seed of God’s Word immediately after it’s been planted.

If you’ve ever… 1) given a thumbs down to the worship music because it was too loud or too bland, too fast or too slow, too traditional or not traditional enough; 2) ranked the choir, worship team, preacher, and kid’s church experience (not necessarily in that order) on a scale of 1-10, according to your personal preferences; 3) If you’ve ever scored the sermon by comparing it to the podcast you heard earlier in the week from a preacher with an internationally acclaimed ministry, then you know what I mean.

Yeah, me too. A critical spirit exposes our fallen, hypocritical nature. It’s just that Christ has given us a new nature, and Paul warns in these verses against the dangers of pronouncing such verdicts. It turns out that only Jesus gets to judge those who are called by his name. He has given some of us to be apostles and teachers, and if our words are not found to be biblical, confessional, and trustworthy, then by means call us to repent and refuse to listen until we do! This sort of judgment is good and necessary.

But we are all servants of the Lord (v. 1) and therefore fellow servants and encouragers of one another. There is only one Master who can ultimately judge our motives and effectiveness. Paul’s detractors in Corinth evaluated him by superficial standards that had nothing to do with the gospel. His critics judged Paul’s apostleship insufficient because he wasn’t as polished and eloquent as the “super-preachers” that their wealthy, well-educated, congregation was used to. But so what?

Does it really matter what a clay pot looks like as long as it faithfully delivers Living Water? In that regard, we are all called to be jars of clay (see 2 Corinthians 4:7). We are flawed but useful vessels sent to pour out God’s truth, hope, grace, and more to a world in need. So let’s not be overly critical of the container, but rather rejoice in its uniqueness and celebrate the blessings it holds.!

Prayer: Father, keep us from a critical spirit that would cast doubt on the value and gifts of others, and from the temptation to live for the approval of others more than your approval. Give us hearts that are humble and hopeful as we await your coming again and the judgment of all things. Until then, make us faithful servants and stewards of your mysteries. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Drink the Water and Live

Isaiah 55:1 (NIV)

"Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost.

I am remembering the story of the woman at the well, and her conversation with Jesus. He told her to drink the living water and she'll never be thirsty again. The book of Isaiah often foreshadows Jesus coming. The prophet, Isaiah, is lifting up a coming Messiah and what hope will be filling His people, the people who seek him, who forsake their evil ways and turn to Him.

Jesus' salvation is free to all. Just embrace His love and let God's grace flow over you in the warmest of hugs.

Isaiah 55:6-7 (NIV)
Seek the LORD while he may be found; call on him while he is near.   Let the wicked forsake his way and the evil man his thoughts. Let him turn to the LORD, and he will have mercy on him, and to our God, for he will freely pardon.

There is still time, change is yet a possibility. God is near, turn to Him while you still can, while He still hears our prayers. As we wait for Christmas and for the birth of our Savior, we have more time to turn our lives around. What a perfect time for a new beginning.

Isaiah 55:8 (NIV)

"For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the LORD.
God's ways are sometimes puzzling and often they don't make sense to us mere mortals, but we can count on the fact that they are always the best. So, as we wait for Advent to bring us to the stable to welcome a tiny baby who will and has changed the world, think about these things and seek the Lord with all your might.

Comfort Food and Living Water

I love fall. That is one of the things I miss most about living in Florida.  We don’t get seasons here and I miss fall the most. In the Midwest, fall has a special smell.  The leaves as they change colors look amazing and the crisp fall air is refreshing to breath in.
I also like foods that come back in season.  Chili, pumpkin pie, pot roast and so many other foods that have been categorized as “comfort foods”.  I would call fall as my “comfort season”.
We are always looking for things that give us comfort or satisfaction.  Whether it’s the people who surround us, the house we live in, or the job we have we long for satisfaction.
In today’s scripture, Jesus encounters a Samaritan woman gathering water from the well.  Jesus knows immediately that this woman has been seeking satisfaction with men.  He offers her living water, ultimately though he is offering her himself.  He is saying that if she looked to him for satisfaction she would not have to look any place else.
Jesus message is the same today. We try to find satisfaction in so many things when Jesus is the only thing that can satisfy.  I am not talking about salvation. Christians can be totally dissatisfied if they accept Christ as their Savior and then distrust him for everything else in life.

Christ came that we might have life and have it to the full, but if we don’t turn to him for our satisfaction we lose out.  So drink in the living water daily.  Consume scriptures teaching of Jesus and talk to him whenever you feel the need to be satisfied. He will not disappoint.

Drink Up

2 Corinthians 4:16-18
New International Version (NIV)
Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

I was away from home for three days. During that time, three short days, no one was tending my garden.  The sun was shining every day and by the time I returned my flowers were wilted; one of them appeared so dried and shriveled I thought there was no hope to revive and restore it to the life and beauty of three days ago. It seemed the only recourse was to uproot it and toss it in the trash.

Aren't there days when we too, feel shriveled up?  Aren't there days when the intense heat of living has beaten down on us so long we say we can't take much more? Aren't there times we fear that without a break from life's oppression we will give in?

Our scripture verses today point to our hope. These lines provide a hope and a new way to look at ourselves and our troubles. "Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day."

When I saw my wilted plants, I did not toss them out, I grabbed the hose and gave them a deep drink of water.  This morning I can see life begin to revive the wilted stems.  I know that if I continue to give them refreshment, they will be restored. They will even be stronger.

Isn't this how God helps us too?  God, our Living Water, breathes new life into our dried up hearts. We may appear to be finished until we take a deep drink from this well of Living Water.
