Growing Up Strong in God's Word - Deuteronomy 6:1-12

This Sunday Devotional was written by Gail Huberty, our guest post for today.  Thanks, Gail.

“LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH.” That’s a pretty tall order these days, with all the different directions our hearts and souls and minds are being pulled. How can we possibly do this with our ALL? Will we have to walk, talk, and breath God’s word every waking moment in order to be worthy of a home with him in Heaven? Must we be so constantly reminding ourselves and others of his promises that we turn others off and away from us because of our insistence on living a Godly life? How do we carry on with only one focus? The Lord blessed us with so many other things to take care of: children, homes, careers, finances, spouses, extended family, friends, the earth………

This scripture passage is preceded in the bible by the introduction of the Ten Commandments through Moses. Our God instructs us; “These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down, and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.”

Well, then I guess the answer is “yes.” We are to live and move and breathe God’s message of eternal life. Hey, don’t panic yet!

1st Peter 4:10 reminds us to use our gifts to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms. It is our job to be creative in our approach to spreading the good news. We are to use our God given gifts and model for the world what is in our hearts. We are not expected to preach if we are not preachers, however our actions will speak volumes to who we are and whom we serve. So please, be as God intended. Be yourself and live your life striving to be as the Lord commanded. We will never reach perfection, but we can surely die trying!
