The history books as well as the Bible are filled with stories of leaders, good and bad. This week has been a particularly troubling week of reading through all of the evil acts of people, kings who were chosen to lead. We think of leaders as honest, trustworthy people who have the best interests of their people in mind. This is not always the case.
1 Kings 16:18-19 (NIV) “When Zimri saw that the city was taken, he went into the citadel of the royal palace and set the palace on fire around him. So he died, because of the sins he had committed, doing evil in the eyes of the LORD and walking in the ways of Jeroboam and in the sin he had committed and had caused Israel to commit.”
Pride and greed was the downfall of many a leader and many a nation over time. Just because an individual has their name in many books; too often the book that counts, The Lamb’s Book of Life, is not one of them. Leaders are called to a high standard because of their gifts which have made them leaders; they have a great responsibility.
There are expectations of leaders. We, as a nation, just went through an election and all the months of hype which surrounded this process of electing a new leader. Many promises were made and now people are waiting for those promises to come to fruition. There are great expectations and hope surrounding the new front-runner. But, as we are witnessing on our journey through The Story, no matter what happens, God is in control and will have the final word.
