2 Corinthians 9:6-9 (NIV) Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. As it is written: "He has scattered abroad his gifts to the poor; his righteousness endures forever."
Paul is teaching the people the value of sharing with each other; the blessing of helping others and giving from our own abundance. Not only to be generous, but to be cheerful in the process. This goes against the world's way of thinking. But that is why it is said Christians live in an upside down society. Everything we do as followers of Jesus goes against the grain of the world.
The world says, "to each his own," Jesus says "feed my lambs." The world tells us to "live and let live," Jesus commands us to "love one another as I have loved you." The list of differences this topsy-turvy world demonstrates could go on endlessly.
When we have trouble letting go of the things of this world, things God has given us in the first place, there is indication of a different problem. Perhaps we worry about having enough for ourselves and our family. Perhaps we have too little faith that Jesus will take care of our needs. I know that for me, sometimes I want more than I need. No, correction, I always want more than I need.
Before I could give graciously God had to do a heart transplant in me. God had to open my eyes to the true nature of my heart. I am not sure when it changed, but one day tithing was just a natural thing. And the grace bestowed upon those who give to others, to the work of the church, is stunning. God loves a cheerful giver. Yes, that is true.
