2 Corinthians 13:1-10
On
Memorial Day, my wife and I went to Tuttle Crossing Mall to do a little
shopping. As we got in the car to back out of our parking spot I carefully
looked in all my mirrors. After all, as an insurance agent, I frequently hear customers
tell about accidents in parking lots, and I certainly did not want to have a
similar experience.
As
I slowly began backing up we came to a sudden and surprising stop as we hit
another vehicle, who was also backing up. This car was in my blind spot and I didn’t
see it.
In
today’s passage Paul called for the Corinthians to evaluate where they were at
spiritually. Eugene Peterson put it this way in The Message:
“Test yourselves to make
sure you are solid in the faith. Don’t drift along taking everything for
granted. Give yourselves regular checkups. You need firsthand evidence, not
mere hearsay that Jesus Christ is in you. Test it out. If you fail the test, do
something about it.” 2 Corinthians
13:5
The
truth is that we all suffer from the human condition which quickly and easily justifies,
rationalizes and ignores sin in our own life. If we are honest, we have to
admit that there are certain areas of our lives that we cannot see. It’s like
the blind spot when you are driving your car, only it’s a spiritual blind spot.
To
find these spiritual blind spots, we need “regular
checkups”, just like the above verse puts it. Without an objective third
person to help us, we likely would never see that blind spot and never change
to become more like Christ. Proverbs 27:17 states: “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens
another.”
This
is a Biblical principle that still applies to us today. God is calling us to
take a closer look at our lives to see where we are at in Christ. Like Paul
with the Corinthians, He wants what is best for us. He wants for us to get past
those blind spots and become more like Him.
